The De La Warr Pavilion is a Grade One Listed Modernist centre for contemporary arts on the seafront of Bexhill on Sea.
Inspired by the 9th Earl De La Warr, the Pavilion was built in 1935 as a pioneering centre for cultural excellence for local people and visitors alike. In 2005, an £8m redevelopment programme continued that vision, creating an international centre for contemporary art, commissioning and presenting works by artists such as Antony Gormley, Jeremy Deller, Grayson Perry, Catherine Yass, Nathan Coley and Tomoko Takahashi.
The Pavilion's 1,000 seat auditorium presents leading music artists such as Patti Smith, Laurie Anderson, Goldfrapp, Jose Gonzales, Bat For Lashes, Duane Eddy and Nanci Griffiths.
The bright and stylish café bar and restaurant serve fresh, seasonal and (where possible) locally-sourced lunches with delicious home-made sandwiches, cakes and speciality teas and coffees all day. Food and drink can be enjoyed on our balconies, overlooking the sea.
The roof terrace is open every day (weather permitting) and provides breathtaking views over the English Channel towards Beachy Head. Every summer on the roof we present an art project - in 2010 an installation by Antony Gormley, in 2011 a public beach complete with sand and palm trees and, in 2012, we will present East Sussex's only Cultural Olympiad project - a sculpture by Richard Wilson which re-creates the famous final scene of The Italian Job.
The Pavilion is always worth a visit. There is plenty for families to do at weekends with interactive gallery events as well as talks and tours of the building The exhibitions are free and open every day between 10am and 6pm, Sundays included and the Pavilion is open in the evenings for live events.
