Bridget Riley - The Curve Paintings 1961-2014
Saturday 13th

open all day
De La Warr Pavilion. Bexhill.
Bridget Riley’s The Curve Paintings, 1961 – 2014 will be the major exhibition at the De La Warr Pavilion this summer. The show launches a year of celebrations marking 80 years of the Pavilion as one of the first and most significant Modernist public buildings in the UK.

Based on her use of curves in an artistic career that spans over 50 years, The Curve Paintings succeed The Stripe Paintings, the artist’s show at David Zwirner Gallery in London in 2014 that investigated the recurrent use of stripes in her work over the same period.

The Curve Paintings, 1961 – 2014 is formed of a selection of paintings, studies and drawings illustrating her close dedication to the interaction of form and colour, and includes Rajasthan (2012), a recent wall painting.

The Curve Paintings is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published by Ridinghouse and features an essay by Paul Moorhouse, the 20th Century Curator at the National Portrait Gallery, London.

The Curve Paintings, 1961 – 2014 will be open 13 June – 6 September.

Suede + Support
Thursday 25th

Doors 7pm
De La Warr Pavilion. Bexhill.
Suede, Suede, what can we say about tricky, dark Suede?

Instigating Britpop with their debut single The Drowners in 1992… Crashing the BRITS in 1993 with an electrifyingly antagonistic performance of Animal Nitrate… Disowning Britpop with their ludicrously grand, tragic second album Dog Man Star in 1994… Propelling the twisted androgyny of their live show and newly-recruited 17 year old boy wonder Richard Oakes to the world in 1995… Retreating, galvanising and winningly unleashing the sheeny pop majesty of Coming Up (“Our record to do your hair to” - Mat Osman) against all odds in 1996… Reeling in the hits in 1997… Plugging their sound into a live power outlet with Steve Osbourne to make the electronic-influenced Head Music in 1998…Descending into illness and addiction in 1999…
It almost stopped with the nineties. But it didn’t…

"It’s hard to tell where Joshua Tillman ends and his alias Father John Misty begins – but perhaps it doesn’t matter when the songs sound this good" Alexis Petridis, the Guardian

NT Live - Everyman
Thursday 16th

7pm
De La Warr Pavilion. Bexhill.
BAFTA winner and Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays, directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road).

Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out.

One of the great primal, spiritual myths,Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since the 15th century, it now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate, and movement by Javier De Frutos.

Mary Chapin Carpenter
Thursday 23rd

7pm
De La Warr Pavilion. Bexhill.
“It’s a beautiful work. The voice. The words. The music. Sublime.”
Marilyn and Alan Bergman on Carpenter’s 2014 album Songs From The Movie

Born in Princeton, New Jersey, Carpenter began playing guitar and writing songs early in life, and was playing her songs in D.C. clubs before she was out of her teens. Word of Carpenter’s talents eventually reachedNashville, winning her a deal with Columbia Records, which released her 1987 debut album, Hometown Girl.

Her debut disc set the stage for the success of 1989’s State of the Heart and 1990’s Shooting Straight in the Dark, each of which produced four Top 20 hits, including the Grammy-winning smash “Down at the Twist and Shout.”

Those releases were followed by the massive commercial breakthrough of 1992’s Come On Come On, which was certified quadruple platinum and yielded no less than seven charting singles.

More success followed with such albums as the platinum Stones in the Road, A Place in the World, Time* Sex* Love* and Between Here and Gone. Carpenter moved to Rounder/Zoë in time for 2007’s Grammy-nominated The Calling, which was followed by the seasonally themed Come Darkness Come Light: 12 Songs of Christmas, the Grammy- nominated The Age of Miracles and Ashes and Roses.

Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards, was named the Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year in 1992 and 1993 and in 2012 was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
