Spike Milligan Question

posted by Dave Tremlin on 12 Nov 2006 at 1:48 pm

Could somebody help please? I am trying to identify the exact location of the OP (pillbox) that was occupied by the Milligan in 1940. He was a member of 56th Regiment RA at the time and wondered whether (a) the pillbox is still there; (b) if not then where it was; (c) a location I can look-up using online maps. ANY help would be appreciated. Many thanks. Dave

Possible Answer To Spike Milligan Question

This chap found the bunker this year, although I believe the bunker is known locally anyway.

Here's a link to this chap's YouTube video, you can contact him via YouTube I guess.

Spike Milligan

Reading about Spike Milligan reminded me that my father used to entertain the troops by taking his band to play in the De La Warr Pavilion during the war. One day a young soldier asked if he could play in the band while he was stationed there. It was Spike and he played regularly in Frank Arthur's Band, in those days called FAB. Quite an up-to-date name, isn't it?

A nursing home opposite No 48 The Highlands Off Turkey Road Bexhill was used to accommodate Anti Aircraft battery troops in the 2nd WW. Spike was living there and mentions it in two of his books. I would surmise that his battery was probably in the (now recreation ground) area at the top of the road.

You don't want the troops too far from thier guns now do you?

Bexhill

The World War II bunker,Pillbox, can be found on the top of Galley Hill. There are only the remains of a military bunker. Spike Milligan was posted to Bexhill from 1940 to 1942 and mentions the bunker in his book 'Adolf Hitler - My Part In His Downfall'

Hope this is of help.

Mrs K Loughborough

I have been trying to find where Spike is supposed to have been camping. Where is Mill Wood (or was) and where is Mrs K Loughborough d. 23rd September 1899 (Not Dead Just Sleeping). Bexhill Cemetery wasn't opened until long after she died. I have looked around the cemetery and can find taps, one of which Spike and his chums were supposed to have used, but I could not find Mrs Loughborough. Was this a deliberate mistake?

I found this map of locations featured in Adolf Hitler, not sure if I agree with the Worthinholm location, but hey.
