Wilton House School

posted by Kelly on 24 Apr 2021 at 1:27 pm

I went to Wilton House school on the mid 60's.
Mrs Auer was the head mistress. Her son, Phillipe, taught English as did Clive Moore. Mr Morer (a New Zealander) taught Geography and Rugby.
There were two Matrons that I remember; Mrs Banham and Mrs Salter.
The School relocated to a village called Catfield (near Battle) and was named Catsfield Place School.
Mr Moore continued to teach English there until he moved to Battle school for Girls. Mr Johnson was the Geography teacher, a big bloke but a good egg.
Mrs Salter and later Miss Anne Townsend were matrons (and Cooks).
Mrs Auer later married a the German care taker (Albert) who had mostly rebuilt the school single handed.
Mrs Banham went on to run a children's home in Hastings.
I have B/W pictures f the old school in Bexhill if anybody is interested.
Take care all
Kelly

I realise that you posted this a long time ago but I’ve only just refound this message board. I was at Wilton house in 1959/61. I would love to see the photos you have. There is a Wilton house Facebook page that people are now using. Lorna

I have some 'sketchy memories' of Wilton house, but I attended there, as did my sister Denise, Brother Steve, and (for a short time) younger brother Carl. We were all with the surname 'Smedley'. Thanks for the info about there being a FB page - I will look at that too! Lots of names I recall and would love to see how/where those people are today.

Phyllis Banham was my aunt! I spent some time at Wilton House. Not a good time at all! I have very dark memories of that place but I would still love to see what photos you have.
